fitness software for personal trainers
Thinking of moving to the Gold Coast QLD, AU from Victoria, BC, Canada….?

Are there many opportunities for a software/web programmer? I am also a personal/strength trainer and tennis instructor and would be happy doing part time work in any of these professions. My wife is planning on working as an Occupational Therapist at a hospital too but she also is an excellent tennis instructor. She has Australian citizenship but I am Canadian so would I need to obtain a Visa?

Also, where would be the best place to live in the Gold Coast area? We have a 2 year old son and our main focus is being as close to a surfing beach as possible while still having access to schools, sports/fitness clubs, shopping and restaurants etc…

Burleigh Heads, Tweed Heads, Sunshine Coast, Coolangatta, Noosa Heads, Surfers Paradise, and Main Beach all look great from the pictures I found on Google, but I would like advice from someone who has been there in person. Thanks!

I have to agree with simplymarie about the Gold Coast, it is a hot spot for tourism and everything that implies. Also every year Australia’s answer to the US Spring Break occurs there with the place inundated with students just finishing High School and breaking free during what is called Schoolies Week.

Also there are not many IT positions around the Gold Coast/Brisbane area with you best bet being Sydney or Melbourne. If surfing is your focus both Sydney and Melbourne offer great opportunities for a nice coastal lifestyle. If you are willing to commute for 2 hours (by train) Newcastle offers a wonderful lifestyle with the easy access to Sydney for work. Wollongong in the south of Sydney can offer a similar experience, and both places have great weather. I’ll leave the surrounds of Melbourne for someone who lives there, but from my perspective either Melbourne or Sydney would be a better choice for the IT career and they have a much greater range of restaurants, nightspots, museums, schools, sporting facilities and the like with many surfing beaches close by. Many Australians say that the Brisbane area (capital city of Queensland about 1 hour north of the Gold Coast) is like a big country town being so laid back with Sydney and Melbourne being more cosmopolitan. Your wife would have no trouble finding work anywhere in the country as there is a countrywide shortage of nurses.

As for visas you should have little issue with your wife being an Australian Citizen meaning you can qualify for the Partner Visa subclasses 309 and 100 ( http://www.immi.gov.au/visawizard/#vw=%23a_results ).
