i’m interested in working as firefighter? tips help im college student lost in life?

last 2 yrs of my life ive been lost and kind of a mess.

im a psych major at northeastern university. ive been dropping classes for last two yrs and just not focused because i had no idea what i want to do. i came up with the hopes of becoming EMT, then doing some work with that and trying to apprentice at fire department in boston.

im a smart guy got 1250 on SAT (not great but gives u idea of some aptitude) im a fitness nut i do triathlons and on my univ judo team. anyways thats what ive been doing instead of school for last 2 yrs.

what does it take (upstairs and literally) to become a firefighter. if i eventually want to go into psychology after doing fire department for less then 10 yrs is that practical.???????????/

sorry this is so long you guys i just came up with this (fits my lifestyle) and its new in my mind i want to see some otherperspectives???

thank you sooo much in advance

-Justin

Hey Justin,
You are starting early with a goal which is good. Look on the Boston FD website.
http://www.cityofboston.gov/fire/hiring.asp
They will be testing soon. This page also has a list of requirements. Start the process now. Often guys will spend years testing before getting hired. The testing process is long and very competitive. Don’t just test for BFD, look into all the smaller cities surrounding Boston. Where else would you like to live? Test there too. The more you test and don’t get hired, you will be learning the process and becoming a better candidate.
If you’ve ever thought about the military you would have extra points on your firefighter test with an honorable discharge

As for a “normal” lifestyle trying to do psychology and firefighting: Think of the time requirement to do your psychology work, you would have to arrange that work around your ff schedule and I imagine psychology work could be quite time consuming. Can you think how your family would suffer while you were gone overnight on your ff shifts and off to psychology work all the other weekdays. And don’t forget, to be your best at either/both jobs you will need to keep up in your training and studies that happen outside of work. That would leave little time for your social/artistic/personal side — which is essential and beneficial for your firefighting job anyway.

Fitness Gurus! Help me pick a healthy goal weight?

I am very short, 155 pounds, and my body fat percentage is 33%. Id like to get it around 21-22%. Im in no rush, I will do it the healthy way, but Im interested to know, how much weight roughly, that will be to lose? Im a “planner” and Id like a proper goal weight to work towards! Thanks to anyone who can help! p.s. please no fitness tips, Ive got all the information I need, just a goal weight! haha

Hi,

Instead of a goal ‘weight’, I think it is more realistic to set a goal ’size’.

What size do you want to fit into? I think a lot of people choose unrealistic goals such as a specific poundage and get disappointed. I know a few people who have toned up and not lost any weight but have dropped 4 pant sizes. Which will be more satisfying to you?

Kickstart your year with a healthy lifestyle

Does anyone use target heart rate training on a treadmill?

I found this free workout plan online that uses heart rate training. It’s called the HRC Planner and can be found here at http://www.truefitness.com/free-workout-plan.aspx It’s a custom 24 week program that uses target heart rate as a means to see improvement in your fitness level.

You first have to KNOW your target heart rate, and that has a huge number of variables, far more that can be accounted for by any website. Ask your doctor what yours should be.

In any workout, you have to reach your target heart rate in order to be working out effectively. So, once you have that figure, you can use it no matter how you are training.

How would I go about starting a health and nutrition club at my local library?

I am actually the manager of the library and I’m trying to lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle as well. I know that I basically want to have weekly weigh ins with incentives and idea sharing as well as invite experts in different areas of fitness and health to come in once a month. Has anyone else done something like this? I’m open to all tips and suggestions.

Hi!
Me and a couple of others coworker are setting up a health program to be implemented in many organizations. The program so far looks very appealing for non-profit organization… Email me if you want to know more about it.
