What walking can do that swimming cannot?

Swimming is supposed to exercise many parts of the body. Is there any health/fitness benefit that WALKING has which swimming does not? Can you name a health/fitness advantage of walking which can’t be achieved so well by swimming?

yes, just as the other person said, swimming doesn’t strengthen your bones. so even if you swim a lot, walking will help you with bone building, so don’t give up walking. on the other hand, swimming could add so many benefits that’s hard to get from walking.

Opinions pls. Best way to get fit…Wii Fit, pole dancing, nordic walking poles, free weights?

I am perplexed.

I’m 46…lost 80 lbs…yay!

Now I don’t know the fastest and best way to get really fit and toned.

I am considering pole dancing for fitness, nordic walking poles, free weights with a walking program or WII fit (which costs more and I’m a bit $ strapped right now).

Ideas? Any other helpful suggestions are appreciated.

I don’t just want to keep the weight off…I want to look really fit and toned, as I have lost weight just through walking before, but I was never toned and firm and strong or felt like I had a sexy body if you understand what I mean.

Thank you so much!

Dancing would be the most fun way and if you like it it sure to keep doing it which will keep it off.

What causes pain in one’s arm-from using a weed-eater or doing arm curls?

I have what seems to be chronic pain in my left arm-right near the bicep-like right in the middle where your arm bends at the elbow. Lifting heavy objects will cause a sharp pain sometimes and or doing arm curls to build your biceps at the fitness center…

Also, doing some landscaping and holding the weed-eater for long periods of time with arm kinda straight out seems to bother it. I don’t think bicep is de-tached. What is the likely cause and what can I do about it? are there arm wraps which could help this situation?

It sounds like tendonitis at the distal radial insertion of the biceps. The tendon is the end of the muscle, where it attaches to the bone. Through overuse or injury, tiny microtears occur in the tenon. this causes pain and inflamation, and is exacerbated by periods of overuse.
An anti-inflamatory like ibuprofen, icing it, and resting it often help.
Your doctor might give you a prescription for an OT or PT to provide iontophoresis with dexamethasone (a corticosteroid) over a period of a few weeks, or sometimes ultrasound can help.

Proper walking technique- how do I learn how to to “walk” properly?

I’ve been told that I walk like I have a “pickle” in a butt! I think it’s from a history of poor posture, and bad walking habits.

Where can I find out how the “proper” way to walk is, eg. foot placement, hip swaying, etc. The only websites I can find discuss speed walking, and walking for fitness.

ok, that’s funny. Take a modeling class, they will teach you to walk.

Is fitness walking an effective option for weight loss?

I have a gut that I’d like to get rid of, so I was wondering if walking for extended periods of time would help in doing so. Is this a viable option?
Also what if I consistently drink water for a month or two, along with walking?
